Feeding Your Kitten

When we were first cat parents twenty years ago, we exclusively fed our kitty dry food. However, learning from our first cat, we now feed our kittens a mix of dry and wet food. It is important that you feed your kitty what you feel is best.

We do recommend you sticking with one brand of food as kitties have sensitive stomachs. If you do decide to switch food, it is recommended that you gradually introduce the new food by mixing it with the old food for a week. As the week progresses, you can increase the new food and decrease the old food.

Having a food routine is also important. While many vets recommend you feed your kitty the same time each day, whether it be wet or dry or both, our vet recommended that we feed our cats wet food twice a day and keep the dry food out for them to free feed.

Also, look for signs that your kitty may not like the food you are feeding them. It took us a few weeks to realize that the dry food we were giving them they were not eating unless we mixed it with the wet food. We gave a different brand a try and they gobbled it up!

We also recommend feeding your cat using an elevated food bowl such as KatSupreme Tilted Cat Food Bowl. The angle of the dish helps your kitty to digest their food better and not throw up after they eat. We have this dish and love it. It is easy to clean since it is stainless steel and is the perfect size for our cats.

We also recommend using a food mat. We love this one from Hoki Found.

Lastly, we are big fans of pet water fountains. It is so important to encourage your cat to drink. We have this one by Pet Libro and it is fantastic. The stainless steel base keeps it from getting slimy. It comes in a variety of fun colors, and the filters are easy to replace. You can also change the way the water flows to your cat’s preference. It keeps the water cool and clean continuously.
